Fish trade program will be the structural bone in strengthening policies, standards and frameworks for the intra-regional fish trade. The program was created and launched with the help of New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) Planning and Coordinating Agency and the WorldFish, African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR)
World fish is a non-profit research and international organization. Its main purpose is to harness the potential of fisheries to reduce poverty and hunger.
The program seeks to improve the quality of life of small-scale fish traders in Africa especially the women. And also to strengthen private sectors association and enhance the competitiveness of small- and medium-scale enterprises. The program also plays an important role of ensuring food security in Africa, providing livelihood and promoting economic growth and development. The program was funded by European Union (EU).
People in Africa depend on fish. It is their main source of protein and nutrition. Fish are also plays an important role in Africa’s food security and economic development.
Professor Ahmed A. El-Sawalhy, Director of AU-IBAR said that “This project will facilitate intra-regional trade in fish and fish products which underscores the vision for an integrated and prosperous Africa.”
The Fish trade program focuses in 4 corners of Africa, western, southern, eastern and central. It will run from Dakar to N’djamena, Dar es Salaam to Durban, Mombasa to Goma, Libreville to N’djamena via Yaoundé. Places were selected on the importance of fish and fish products.
The program will be a great help in boosting the economy of the places involved and the whole Africa in particular. It is also a way on how they can maximize the use of their natural resources. In this instance, fish plays an integral role in their everyday lives thus improving and knowing the use of the resources that they have can make a huge difference in their everyday lives.
The main benefits that the program will provide is first, it can creates jobs, second it creates awareness and lastly it creates a sustainable and reasonable way of living. It strengthens partnerships from the government and to the private sectors and hopefully soon enough new projects and programs will be available soon.
And having said that a lot of opportunities will be open to the people of the 4 corridors included on the program.
The program will probably take time but the good thing is, it is already available and well established. It is now depending on the people, the national government as well as the private sectors to give their parts in order to make this project successful.
