In a span of 22 years from 2008 to 2030, Kenya’s overall economic, social and political status is set to be changed by a bold program by President Mwai Kibaki known as Kenya Vision 2030. In this program, Kenya will become a productive middle income nation where its citizens will live a high quality way of life. One of the main objectives of Kenya Vision 2030 is to improve the country’s productivity in farming and livestock. With agriculture being one of the key players in the country’s economic growth, Kenya still haven’t attained a level where food shortage is no longer a part of the country’s major concerns. A huge portion of the population is still dependent on food aid. That’s where Kenya Vision 2030 steps in.
One of the program’s projects is to draft an Agriculture Sector Reform Bill that legalizes Kenya’s political will to eradicate food shortage. Three bills have already been signed; The Crop Development Bill, The Agriculture and Livestock research Bill and The Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Authority Bill. The said bills have been aligned with the country’s new constitution. Coordination among the country’s leaders should be a top priority and that’s where political will comes into play.
In order to increase productivity among farmers, a fertilizer cost reduction program was also prioritized. This aims to make fertilizers affordable and accessible to farmers who are considered to be among the country’s key economic players. This countrywide project has already commenced and the government is continuously distributing fertilizers to farmers at an affordable rate.
To meet an international marketing standard, Kenya’s livestock must also be secured. Five livestock Disease Free Zones have been set up to improve Kenya’s meat products. This includes quality veterinary services to assure Kenya’s meat products will pass export quality. Meat production has been an important part of the world economy’s growth where Kenya aims to be among the top players. This project will also generate more jobs through livestock services.
Lastly, for the country’s crops to pass high standards, Kenya needs to have outstanding irrigation facilities. Irrigation projects have already commenced particularly among the Arid and Semi-Arid lands. This bold project plays a vital role in the entire campaign as crops are considered to be the most affordable food sources among Kenyans. Since agriculture is the 2nd key player in the country’s economic growth, irrigation projects will help boost crop productivity not just for profit but also for food security.
Kenya Vision 2030 will highlight the country’s political will to improve the lives of its constituents. It also aims to make Kenya as one of the key worldwide economic players by 2030. With political will on the way, this long term program will surely be a part of world history.
